Counselling for Women in South London

Why Counselling for Women?

I have learned that like many women, I speak and think in a multi-modal, spiral way, using both hemispheres of my brain and the intelligence of my body all at the same time.

Dr Christiane Northrup

Counselling offers you the opportunity to share experiences of distress in a confidential, safe space, with a professional who is trained to listen empathically and to help you understand why you feel the way you do and how you might improve your sense of wellbeing and happiness.

Central to the counselling relationship are the ideas of mutual respect, trust and open communication. For many women, this means finding support through another woman - someone who is best placed to understand the challenges you face and the particular pressures you are under; who is able to relate to the ways in which you express yourself; who can empathise with and honour the aspirations you have.

Counselling for Women offers you a space in which to relax and feel safe in talking about anything which may be affecting your wellbeing. As a counsellor who is experienced in working with women from many different cultures and backgrounds, my approach is positive and affirming; acknowledging the difficulties you may be facing whilst working collaboratively with you to discover inner resource, vitality and an enduring sense of identity.

As a guide to some of the issues women have brought to me, it may be helpful to reflect on the following:

  • Am I able to find a balance between being true to myself and fulfilling the roles others expect of me - as friend, sister, daughter, mother, partner, colleague?

  • Do I feel comfortable and safe in my own body, alive to sensual experience, open to nurture, nature and a deep sense of self-worth and wellbeing?

  • Am I able to communicate my emotional needs, protect my boundaries, confidently assert my identity and values?

  • Can I reflect on experiences of loss, trauma or abuse and retain my sense of self, or do I sometimes feel overwhelmed by what I have been through?

  • Is my role at home or at work in keeping with my vision and self-concept? Am I respected and fulfilled in what I do?

Naturally this is not an exhaustive list, rather a taster of some of the themes we may look at during the course of our work together. Most importantly, you are my guide in terms of the issues you bring and how we explore them.
